Which Facebook Presence is Right for You?
Facebook offers many ways for you and your group to connect with others. Here's a current comparison of the different Page, Group and Cause options so you can choose the right Facebook presence.
1. Personal Profile - for individual person
- 2-part name only. FB now recognizes common words and does not allow names that sound like a business or organization
- Person to person connection is a "friend" - must be mutually approved
- Can send direct messages that appear in the other person's "inbox" folder, which also allows for email notification
- Can send event invites, application invites, page suggestions and friend suggestions to their friends
- No page stats/metrics provided by FB
2. Official Page - for nonprofits, artists, public figures, brands, & organizations
- Must be created by official representative, but FB doesn't require this representative to be a FB personal user (a limited "business account" is now available)
- Admin name is never displayed
- Public - visible and searchable by all Web users
- Accessible to all FB users - anyone can "like" you, becoming your "fan"
- Cannot direct messages to people - mass messages you send will go into a person's "updates" folder, not "inbox" (status updates still appear in News Feed)
- Can send event invites to "fans" but not suggestions
- Can add Static FBML application, allowing for more media and customization
- Page stats/metrics provided by FB
3. Community Page - for any topic/cause for which you want to generate support
- Can be created with a limited "business" account or by a personal user
- Admin name is never displayed
- Public - visible and searchable by all Web users
- Accessible to all FB users - anyone can "like" you, becoming your "fan"
- Cannot direct message to people - mass messages you send will go into a person's "updates" folder, not "inbox" (status updates still appear in News Feed)
- Can send event invites to "fans" but not suggestions
- Can add Static FBML applicaiton, allowing for more media and customization
- Page stats/metrics provided by FB
- If the page becomes very popular with thousands of FB "fans" then FB will adopt and maintain the Page
4. Group - for multiple persons, can be any topic
- Must be created by FB personal user
- Admins are visible - can be multiple persons
- Not Public - visible and searchable only to FB users
- Access can be restricted
- Up to 5000 members - can send direct messages that will appear in the person's "inbox" folder. Groups with 5000+ get "updates" instead
- Can send event invites to "fans" but not suggestions
- Cannot add applications to page
- no page stats/metrics provided by FB
5. Cause - personal application used to develop support for specific issue, campaign or non-profit
- A specific Cause must be created by FB personal user, or they can "join" an existing Cause
- Person can donate directly to a Cause and "recruit" others to join and donate
- Personal success in recruiting and donating is tracked by Cause application
- Allows for fundraising campaigns within the FB site (a small percentage is deducted.)
Facebook provides many methods for you and your team to link with others. I'm not sure but I know that it is the 2nd or the 3rd website that is most frequented by web customers. So it is not a shock that Facebook is very useful in promotion.
